New website for young people27 September 2003Young people working and studying in the Royal Borough will be able to get more advice and help making decisions than ever before when a new website KC Central goes live this week. The site is a joint project involving the Council, local health services and charities, but has largely been put together by young people themselves. Aimed at 11 -18 year olds, the site includes information and links on health, education, work and training and provides a confidential advice service for those who need it. Visitors can talk to each other and give their views on bulletin boards and regular polls will be taken on current hot topics. The site can be found at www.kccentral.rbkc.gov.uk. Julio, 18, worked on some of content and said: " I think the site will be really popular and useful for young people in the area. All my friends use the net all the time and to have a site just for us is really exciting. I think in a short time we will all visit it every day to see what is going on." Cabinet member for Social Service's and Health, Councillor Shireen Ritchie said: "This is exactly the kind of easy access resource that young people need. It will help provide confidential advice on topics that young people may feel too embarrassed to ask from others. It is encouraging that so many young people have been, and will remain involved in the development of this site." The site has taken 18 months to complete and was built around the results of a survey of young people in the Borough. The site will be continually developed to have ever more features and will keep track of advances in technology. It is hoped that young people will soon be able to receive text alerts with information about local events and occasions. A management board of young people is being set up and the site is being promoted all around the Royal Borough.
