New life skills studio offers great boost to local community22 October 2003Royal Borough Mayor, Cllr Christopher Buckmaster was on hand last night (21 October) to open the new boost Life Skills Studio at Kensal Library, part of an inspirational community project aimed at delivering basic skills training for adults via public libraries. The new project offers support and motivation to adults and 'hard to reach' learners who have difficulty with literacy and number skills. It helps people to gain new skills by offering free tuition from qualified teachers. Services offered by boost range from assisting the elderly with computer training to helping refugee groups to improve their English skills, and working with community groups to help disabled users find employment. Royal Borough Mayor, Cllr Buckmaster said: "The new Life Skills Studio offers adult learners who are traditionally hard to reach a great opportunity to gain new skills will assist them to live their lives the way they choose." Cabinet Member for Education, Libraries and the Arts, Cllr Mary Weale added: "The Council is delighted to see this project coming to life. It makes learning more accessible and places our libraries firmly at the heart of the community." With publicity and information translated into six different languages, the hope is that the whole community will receive a real boost from the Royal Borough's libraries.
