Food hazard warning: Morphakis tahini28 October 2003The Royal Borough's environmental health officers today passed on warnings from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) about contamination to tahini, a savoury paste made from ground sesame seeds. Tahini, a Middle Eastern and Mediterranean speciality, is often used to make hummus. The affected brand of product is called “Morphakis Tahini - Crushed Sesame Seeds” and is made by C H Morphakis Ltd. It is sold in 310g screw top glass jars with a black label showing a picture of a bowl of tahini on the front, with lettering mostly in white. All jars of the product with the best before date of 31.12.2006 could potentially be contaminated and should not be eaten. Any shops or catering establishments that have the product must ensure that it is removed from sale or thrown away. The product has been withdrawn from sale by the importer. The product has been on sale in cash and carry stores, delicatessens and specialist food stores across England as well as one outlet in Cardiff. Random tests were carried out on this brand last week in a follow-up investigation after another tahini product, made by Samih Hassan Al Yaman & Sons/SH Yaman & Sons, was found to be contaminated with salmonella earlier this month and withdrawn from restaurants and cafes.
