Adopt or foster - the magic of being a family30 October 2003Tariq is just one of many children currently looking for adoptive parents in Kensington and Chelsea. National Adoption Week (3 - 9 November) is an important opportunity for children like Tariq to find the new family they have always dreamt about. The week aims to highlight stories like his and encourage potential adoptive families and long-term foster carers to come forward to give a child a permanent home The year's theme is 'Wishing for a Family' and during the week children waiting for adoption across the Borough will be sharing their hopes and dreams for their new family. The week will be supported by a drop-in service that will advise people considering fostering and adoption on the available options. The event will take place on Wednesday, 5 November between 10.00am and 4.00pm at Westway Information Centre, 140 Ladbroke Grove, London, W10 5ND. The Royal Borough needs adoptive parents and long-term foster carers from all racial, cultural and religious backgrounds, and from all social classes to meet the needs of our children for permanent families. At the moment we have a number of mixed heritage children who urgently need a new family, this includes individual children and brothers and sisters who wish to stay together. Nationally, over 3,000 children are still looking for adoptive parents. Cabinet member for Social Services and Health Councillor Shireen Ritchie said: "Right now we have many children waiting for a new family and we want to reach out to the widest possible audience. Our key message is that we need adopters from all backgrounds to come forward regardless of income, race or marital status. We also want to raise awareness about new government legislation which means that from October adoptive parents and families will be entitled to more support than ever before."
