Statement re: Notting Hill Carnival - 15/08/11

I fully appreciate the growing concerns within the business and local community about the Notting Hill Carnival this year.

Discussions are being held with organisers of Notting Hill Carnival and with the Chief Executives of both Westminster City Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea to assess the potential impact upon Carnival following the recent disorder across London.

I know many of you have suggested that Carnival be cancelled this year. A meeting of all agencies and the organisers involved in the event is planned for 18th August.

There are many considerations to take into account but the safety and security of residents, businesses and their property is of paramount concern for all involved.

We will work with the organisers and other partners to mitigate the current risks associated with the event, providing you with appropriate advice and help, whilst ensuring an appropriate policing response is part of the overall plan for the day.

I will update you as to the details following the meeting on Thursday.
