Winter maintenance Department of Transport grant, 2009 and
2010
The severe winters of 2009 and 2010, with prolonged periods of
sub-zero temperatures, had an extremely detrimental impact on roads
and pavements in the Royal Borough. The problems with ‘pot hole’
damage were reported widely in the media.
As a consequence the Department of Transport announced that
£100m in 2009/2010 and a further £200m in 2010-11 would be provided
to local authorities by way of a grant to help combat the impact of
the severe weather. Kensington and Chelsea’s share of the grant for
the two years was £41,700 and £107,634 respectively.
The Council, under its normal programmed work, resurfaces about
fifty roads annually. Most of the budget for highway maintenance is
used for programmed work with a small amount spent on reactive
work, thus making the best use of our resources. The Government
grant was injected into our annual programme and used to repair the
worst affected roads. These included sections of North Pole Road,
Campden Hill Road, Victoria Road, Kensal Road and Ladbroke
Grove.
