London Fire Brigade
General safety information to help you have a safe and happy Carnival
Barbecues
Place on level ground away from sheds, fences, overhanging trees, shrubs or flammable materials. Position the barbecue so that it doesn’t restrict the movement of people.
Do not use petrol to light it. Use firelighters or starter fuel. Do not overfill with charcoal – 5cm depth is adequate. Never leave a barbeque unattended. Be aware that fatty foods will cause coals to flare up. When finished allow the contents to cool. Never place contents in a dustbin.
Bottled gas barbeques
In addition to the above:
- Turn off controls and cylinder valve before you change the cylinder
- Change the cylinder in open air or a well-ventilated area
- If you suspect a gas leak from one of the connections or pipe brush soapy water over all of the joints and watch for bubbles. If you find a leak tighten the joint but don't over tighten
- When finished, turn off at cylinder valve before the controls. This will burn off excess gas in pipe
- Store cylinder valve outside
Safe cooking
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Make sure the cooker is switched off when you have finished using it
- Never hang tea towels on the cooker
- Don't let leads from other appliances trail across the cooker
Safe electrics
- Don't overload power sockets; use the correct type of multi outlet extension leads if necessary
- Don't create trip hazards with trailing cables
Candles
Candles are very popular, but can cause a fire if you are not careful.
- Place on a flat, heat resistant and stable surface
- Never put on polished plastic surfaces like a television
- Always use a proper candleholder; making sure it holds the candle firmly
- Leave plenty of space above candle; keep away from draughts, curtains and furniture
- Never leave unattended or go to sleep when they are alight
If fire breaks out… warn other people! get out and stay out!
