Chelsea-Hackney Line: wins local backing
Results of a survey from the Council showed 60 per cent of local residents support the
fight to bring a new rail line to Chelsea.
These results came from a September survey of the Residents' Panel (made up
of a sample of 2,400 Kensington and Chelsea residents). The Panel's members were
asked for their views on whether the Council should continue to fight for the
Chelsea-Hackney Line to include stations in the borough. Only 13 per cent of
respondents answered 'No', with 25 per cent unsure.
The majority of your feedback from Issue 01 of RBKC Direct mirrored this as
you sided with the Council's view that a new rail line is vital for the borough.
Your comments included:
"This development is absolutely essential to ease the gridlock in the area."
"A link between south-west Chelsea and Clapham Junction would not only
be useful to residents of all three boroughs, but would reduce traffic
congestion over Wandsworth and Battersea Bridges too."
One person who did not support the plans commented:
With Fulham Broadway, West Brompton and Sloane Square, not forgetting
South Kensington and Gloucester Road this area is surely more than catered
for."
While the Council is keen to support any transport alternatives that will
improve local public transport and accessibility (such as river buses), a new
underground link is key to opening up the south-west of the borough. The major
long-term transport priority therefore remains the Chelsea-Hackney Line.
