RBKC Direct: Changing the landscape in Kensington and Chelsea

Issue 09: December 2005

Kensington and Chelsea is renowned for its award-winning streetscape and as the most densely populated borough in western Europe, planning issues are very important.

In this issue of RBKC Direct we explain how the Council is setting out planning guidelines for the future. We also look at how our scheme to develop the world-famous Exhibition Road is progressing and the Council's plans to make its various departments and services more accessible to members of the public.

We have also included a short survey about RBKC Direct on the back page. Please tell us what you think about this publication and how we can improve it. It should only take a few minutes to fill in and you could even win £25 of vouchers.

Local Development Framework: Towards "a Better City Life"

New legislation means that the Council has to produce a collection of documents which will form the basis on which planning decisions are made in the borough: a Local Development Framework (LDF).

Our belief is that the framework must be informed and influenced by local people so that the borough continues to be a good place to live, work and visit.

A new dawn for London's cultural centre

Exhibition Road is home to numerous institutions, including three national museums, three universities, the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Geographical Society. Despite the intellectual importance of the area, the streetscape along Exhibition Road is cluttered, confusing to visitors and unfriendly to pedestrians.

Read on to see how the Council is championing redevelopment plans that will take Exhibition Road into the twenty-first century.

Improving the Customer Experience

A change in the way the Council provides services to customers is underway. Already many people get the information they need or access services online, but now dedicated telephone numbers, a new "one stop" service centre and services that are easier to get access to and understand are all on the agenda in a shake-up that will coincide with the Town Hall's 30th birthday.

RBKC Direct Survey

RBKC Direct has been telling the stories of some of the Council's main achievements for the past two years. Now we would like to know what you think of this publication. Every completed questionnaire will be entered in to a prize draw for a £25 gift voucher.
