RBKC Direct: On Sloane Square, the Congestion Charge extension, Edenham Care Home and the chewing gum campaign

Welcome to edition 13 of RBKC Direct. In this issue we discuss the latest developments in the Council's plans to transform Sloane Square. We also give you the latest news about the Congestion Charge that will be enforced in the Royal Borough in February 2007.

This issue also explains why the Council has decided to close Edenham Care Home and the Council’s ongoing campaign to stop people from dropping their chewing gum on the streets.

Sloane Square update

Sloane Square faces increasing congestion. Pedestrians vie for space on the pavement and the volume of traffic discourages people from crossing to the central area. The Council sees Sloane Square as a gateway to world-class shopping and also a civilised place to meet and enjoy Chelsea life. Read on to understand the Council’s plans to transform this iconic landmark.

Congestion Charge coming soon

Despite widespread opposition from the Council and residents, the congestion charge will be extended into Kensington and Chelsea in February. The Council has had some joy in lessening the impact by successfully negotiating a 90 per cent discount for all residents. The impact of the extended charge will be monitored and the Council will report back to Transport for London (TfL) if needs be.

Edenham Care Home

The decision to close Edenham Care Home in North Kensington, has received plenty of negative publicity, but the Council does not shy away from taking tough decisions, as it strives to provide the highest standard of care for elderly people in Kensington and Chelsea.

Has the bubble burst?

The Council’s attempts to rid the streets of discarded chewing gum have resulted in only a limited success, so now the question being asked is "what else can be done to clean up the borough’s streets?".
