Annual review

Kensington Town Hall

Report to Taxpayers

Kensington and Chelsea Council has just published its ‘Report to Taxpayers’, an annual summary describing how we are performing. The report provides an overview of how the money we receive from local residents and businesses, and from central Government, is spent and reviews how the Council has performed.

The last financial year has been a successful one in which children and young people in the borough’s schools achieved their best ever exam results with 69 per cent of students getting five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C.

The amount of recorded crime between 2007-08 was down 3.5 per cent from the previous year with police recording 843 fewer crimes. Figures from Defra show we are the third best performing borough in the capital for recycling dry materials – last year 23.58 per cent of waste was recycled.

Meanwhile visitors to the Town Hall are benefiting from a new, modern and welcoming customer service centre.

Chelsea Academy is on course to open in September 2009 and to move into one of the finest school buildings in the country a year later – information about entrance will be available on the Council’s website www.rbkc.gov.uk.

Top rating

The Council is one of just three in the UK to have achieved a top rating in the Government’s comprehensive performance assessment – the main mechanism for assessing local authorities – each year since the process was introduced in 2002. All this was achieved without an increase in locally determined council tax in 2007-08 and only a 2.5 per cent increase for 2008-09.

How can we improve

Of course, we understand there are areas where the Council needs to improve. How do you think we have performed over the last year? To download and read the report go to Report to Taxpayers Alternatively we can send you the report, write to Tim Somerville, Policy and Partnerships Unit, Town Hall, Hornton Street, London W8 7NX.
