employees, and shows that a business cares about the
environment
- all recyclable materials can be disposed of in the same sack or
container
What can be recycled?

cardboard

Why shredded paper cannot be recycled
We can no longer accept shredded paper in the
orange recycling sacks or the mixed orange recycling
containers. It should now be disposed of in a general waste sack
(blue) or general waste container (blue). Alternatively if your
waste is confidential you may want to use a specialised company to
collect the waste.
Shredded paper is too small for the
mixed recycling plant to process. It falls through the holes of the
machine along with small pieces of broken glass, which means it
ends up contaminating the glass.
Also, the fibres on shredded paper
are so short that paper mills and paper re-processors do not
accept it.
By being disposed of with the general waste, it is
ultimately sent to an energy-from-waste incinerator plant where
energy can be recovered.
Important note about contamination in recycling
When non-recyclable items are mixed in with the recycling or
when recyclables are presented in the bin incorrectly, this is
referred to as ‘contamination’.
Recycling bins containing contaminated
material end up being incinerated or landfilled with the general
waste.
Poor recycling is leading to cost increases in
waste disposal and has an environmental impact.
Contamination in recycling costs us all.
Failure to adhere to the above guidance may see
your recycling contract terminated.

Recycling services

The Council offers both orange sacks and orange containers for
businesses to store and dispose of recycling.
The Council has also designed the Office Recycling Box
[PDF] (file size 208Kb) to help businesses dispose
of waste inside the office.
- an orange sack is placed inside the box and removed when
full this is an easy way to separate recycling from general
waste in the office
- the box acts as a focal point in an office, reminding people to
recycle, and eliminates contamination
- the box is designed to the same dimensions as an orange sack,
allowing a sack to fill to its full dimensions, resulting in cost
savings
Orange recycling theme
All sacks and containers are orange. Orange was chosen as it is
a bright colour and it is easy to identify which sack or container
is for recycling.
