October 2008

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and its Exhibition Road partners have announced they are teaming up with Imperial College London to install a trial panel at Imperial College to road test materials for the exciting transformation of the city’s premier cultural destination.

From October, the Project team and Imperial College will carry out a series of technical tests on the panel over the next twelve months to select the most durable mortar for the road, as well as conduct in-depth assessments of testing regime and edge details. The panel structure will also be closely monitored for any changes throughout all weather conditions in a series of month-by-month tests.

Cllr Daniel Moylan, Deputy Leader of the Council said: “At the heart of the redesign of Exhibition Road is our desire to create a safe and attractive environment for everyoneto enjoy, and with the area attracting over 11 million visitors each year, we are mindful of ensuring that the striking single surface is as durable as it is attractive.

Over the next 18 months, RBKC will make further improvements to street design, traffic flows and parking arrangements, to transform the area into magnificent pedestrian-friendly realm.
