What is it?

Boys at football trainingThe Trainee Football Coaching Scheme is a coaching programme for aspiring young football coaches (aged 16 to 26) in th Royal Borough. The 3 month programme (runs from September to December) and enables selected young people to develop and gain valuable practical coaching experience of working with children and young people in both a school and community setting.

Based at Westway Sports Centre the coaching scheme works intensively with 6 recruited young people. The scheme focuses on the development of the key attributes and skills required to be a good quality young football coach.

This scheme imparts valuable knowledge, skills and experience onto young people in a ‘real life’ environment; whilst providing a positive environment for young coaches to learn and develop as positive young role models in their local community.

A young person's perspective of the scheme

“I joined the Trainee Football Coaching Scheme in September 2010 when I received a letter through the post, I wasn’t working at the time and was really interested in doing the scheme so I signed up for it. Before the scheme started I had zero knowledge about being a football coach even though it was something I’d always been interested in, but over the three months I’ve learnt a lot.

The scheme has taught me the fundamentals of being a football coach, has built up my confidence in general and it's thanks to the great support throughout the scheme from my mentors Jeff & Adam, I’m now currently working as an apprentice for the next year with RBKC youth sports development team, where I assist coaches in a variety of sessions and manage the sports section on the KC Central website. In the near future I hope to gain my FA Level 2 qualification and my ultimate aim is to become a self employed football coach and run my own sessions.

I would recommend the Trainee Football Coaching Scheme to anyone who is interested in becoming a football coach; you gain a qualification, over 100 hours coaching experience and a stepping stone to a future within football coaching.”                   Nathan, 21.
