Young people often get treated less fairly than other shoppers
because they don't know their consumer rights.
You don't have to be over 18 to have consumer rights; children and
young people under 18 have them too.
You should:
- never accept anything which is faulty or which doesn't do what
it says on the tin - you can take it back and the shop must give
you your money back
- always act quickly and don't wait to complain - the quicker you
act, the more likely you are to get your money back
- never let the shop pretend it’s the manufacturer’s fault - if
something is wrong, the shop must deal with your complaint
- try writing to the shop's management or speaking to your
local
council's trading standards team if at first you don’t
succeed
Thanks to the young people’s section of the DirectGov
website for this information.
