Data Protection ActThe Data Protection Act 1998 makes sure that anyone who has information about you only uses or shares it when they are supposed to.

It applies to any information which can identify you (such as your name and address) and covers both electronic and paper-based information.

It also includes photographs and video footage which identifies you.

Anyone holding your information must:

  • tell you why they are collecting your information
  • make sure your information is accurate and up-to-date
  • get rid of it when they’ve finished using your information
  • stop sending you junk mail if you ask them
  • keep your information secure

You have the right to:

  • be told what your personal information will be used for
  • see what personal information other people or organisations hold about you - all you have to do is write to them and ask
  • ask for any information which is wrong about you to be corrected
