The forum is a great opportunity for people who really want to make a difference in their community. There are incentives such as vouchers and cinema trips. We are hopefully going to travel to another country to do some research for Black History Month too. You really should try this, it’s not only hard work - we do have fun a lot of the time and the hard work ends up being fun when things go according to plan.

What is the Golborne Ward Youth Forum?

The Youth Forum is a place for developing skills that can be used inside and out of the forum. We meet to discuss ways to get young people’s voices heard.

Who can be on the forum?

Any young person aged between 13 and 25 (although the focus of the service is on young people aged between 13 and 19) who lives or attends school/college in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

I’ve grown in confidence since I became a member of the Golborne Ward Youth Forum. I’m now able to speak within a group. I wouldn’t do that before.

What does the Youth Forum do?

The Youth Forum has been involved in a range of activities, including:

  • organising events within the area
  • creating surveys and carrying out research to find out what activities young people want
  • going on residential trips and international youth exchanges
  • debates about local democracy and citizenship issues
  • working with other agencies to build relationships such as the Police Community Support officers
  • designing publicity to promote events and services for young people
  • fundraising

How much of my time would I need to give to the Youth Forum?

The forum meets once a month and members dedicate up to a week of their time to the forum every month to action tasks. The forum requires a degree of flexibility from its members, especially when organising a major event.

What will I get out of it?

You will gain a whole range of personal and social development skills, including:

  • team working
  • confidence building
  • communication
  • problem solving
  • peer leading
  • public speaking
  • presentation

You may also have opportunities for both national and international travel.

I have been in the Golbourne Ward Youth Forum since it started. I joined because I wanted to be involved in making our area a better place to live in. We have organised lots of different activities which have helped to bring people together. I have made new friends with children I would never have had the chance to meet if I hadn’t been a part of the forum. The Youth Forum is a lot of hard work, dedication and demands punctuality but it is worth it when you see the difference that we are making in our local community.  It’s nice to feel that my opinion counts and to be rewarded for it.
