What is UKYP?

The United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) is an organisation
that gives young people a chance to express their views and
opinions. UKYP is the base of campaigns that change the UK to
benefit and support young people in a positive way.
RBKC Youth Parliament Elections 2011-12
We are now taking applications for next year's candidates
To become the new Deputy Member of the Youth Parliament (DMYP),
and represent young people in Kensington and Chelsea, you do not
need to be a great academic student. What is important is that you
need to:
- be passionate,
- want to change things,
- and able to talk to people.
You will be required to put in about 7 hours a week as MYP for
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
If you are interested in standing please download the
application form below.
Closing date extended to Friday 18 February 2011.
How the elections work
The election process has changed this year! We are only opening
the application process for a DMYP. Young people feel that a two
year term will provide better outcomes from the Member of Youth
Parliament (MYP). The selected candidate will undergo a year as
DMYP, receive training and support to improve their skills. They
will then automatically become the Member of the Youth
Parliament for the following year. A new deputy will then be
elected to support the new MYP.
What does UK Youth Parliament do?
The UK Youth
Parliament gets involved in a range of activities, including:
- Carrying out research into what young people
want from their Council.
- Debates about local, national and global
youth, democracy and citizenship issues.
- Organising local events.
- Developing publicity to promote events and
services for local young people.
- Going on residential trips and international
youth exchanges.
- Attending conferences and events, including
supporting the 2012 bid.
- Being part of the interview panels for
employing staff.
What does a MYP do?
MYPs meet with
MPs and local councillors, organise events, run campaigns, make
speeches, hold debates and ensure the views of young people are
listened to by decision makers. The most important aspect of any
MYP’s job is to make sure they represent the views of the young
people in their constituency. MYP’s generally spend between one and
five hours per week on UKYP activities.
UKYP is a place I feel young people can make a political change
as a MYP you get to meet different MYP’s from around London and
create regional campaigns, this helps you as a person boost your
confidence and change your opinion of people areas and young people
generally, I enjoy it very much and it’s a great way to get to know
people and it makes you get around.

Member of Youth Parliament, Kensington & Chelsea)
How to get involved?
To get involved you need to have something to
say, and a voice! You can:
UKYP is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get involved
in local democracy and decision-making. It provides many
opportunities, and the chance for a political education/development
people would not normally have access to. Through UKYP I have met
and dealt with young people both in my area and across the country
that I would not otherwise have had a chance to, had
character-building experiences and become involved in a number of
interesting and/or important projects.
Nathan, 16 (Deputy Member
of Youth Parliament, Kensington & Chelsea)
