The Royal Borough and the 2012 Games

‘Inspired by the Games’ Programme

The ‘Inspired by the Games’ programme will form part of the Council’s London 2012 Games legacy offer to local children and young people aged 8 to 19 years. The programme will capture the excitement generated from this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games by providing a range of local opportunities for children and young people to try out new sports.

Starting in mid September, up to 15 Olympic sports will be offered weekly across the local community including archery, diving, trampolining, kayaking, table tennis and sailing.

‘Inspired by the Games’ is also celebrating the achievements of some of the borough’s many talented local young sports people who have Olympic aspirations of their own. A short showcase film will be presented throughout the borough’s schools and youth clubs, and will profile a selection of young sports people to inspire other children and young people to participate in sport. The five young people featured in the film are:

  • Aiman Rizk, Basketball (gained a University Basketball Scholarship to the USA)
  • Kareem Cheriton, Fencing (European Championships Under 17s Silver Medallist, Athens 2010)
  • Beni Matthieu, Judo (Gold Medallist, London Youth Games)
  • Adam Mahmood, Kayaking (Great Britain Youth Development Squad)
  • Jessica Harper, Swimming (Trialled for 2012 Paralympic Games Squad)
