London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay
Give someone you know a chance to shine
Do you know someone truly inspirational? This is
your chance to give them their moment to shine. You have until 29
June 2011 to nominate them to be a London 2012 Olympic
Torchbearer and don't forget, you can nominate more than one
person, as long as they are aged 12 and over, with no upper age
limit.
Lit in Greece, the Olympic Flame sets off from
Land's End in Cornwall on 19 May 2012. Representing peace, unity
and friendship, the Flame will be carried by 8,000 inspirational
Torchbearers on its journey to the Olympic Stadium and the opening
ceremony of the London Games on Friday 27 July 2012. It will visit
all London boroughs - including the Royal Borough - with evening
celebrations at Waltham Forest, Bexley, Wandsworth, Ealing,
Haringay and Westminster. The whole route is still in development
and will be announced later this year.
As it makes its way across the UK on a 70-day journey it will
bring the excitement of the Games to everyone, with 95 percent of
the population within a one hour journey time of the London 2012
Olympic Torch Relay. Please see more information on
the torch relay.
Councillor Sir Merrick Cockell, Leader of the
Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, said: “I know we have many
inspirational people, young and old in the borough, and would urge
our residents to take time and nominate someone who has a special
story to tell, has sporting talent or has made a real
contribution to the life of the community to take part in this
historic event.
“Of course we are already very proud to be
hosting not only the Olympic volleyball competition but also the
cycle road races and I am delighted that the Olympic Torch relay
will provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our
residents.”
