School visits
18 Stafford Terrace is the best surviving example of a Victorian
family townhouse within the UK. Remaining largely intact with all
its family possessions and decoration in place, it is a complete
immersive experience for schools into the world of the
Sambourne family who lived there from 1875. The educational
offering at 18 Stafford Terrace has won national awards for
excellence (Sandford Award Winners 2004 and 2009).
Primary schools - costumed tours
All primary led tours are delivered by costumed actresses
playing the roles of either Mrs Marion Sambourne or her
housekeeper, Mrs Reffel. Your class will have a 10 minute welcome
and orientation on arrival and then meet the actresses. Total visit
time is 1 hour 30 mins. Unfortunately, we do not have any lunchroom
facilities, however there is a covered cafe in nearby Holland
Park.
Year 1 - Homes from the past
Bring along your Year 1 pupils to discover exactly how their
homes differ from those of previous times and what such differences
mean for everyday living. Particular focus is given to the
functions of different rooms and the lives of children.
Years 2 - 5 - The Victorians
Whether you are beginning to look at the Victorian period with
your class or are coming to the end of that module of work, use 18
Stafford Terrace to put your teaching in context. Focusing on the
daily lives of the Sambourne family, our costumed actresses will
bring alive the experiences of what it was like to live in the
Victorian era.
Secondary schools - professional art workshops
For Year groups 6 - 11 we book professional artists to work with
your students within the historic interiors of 18 Stafford Terrace
to take inspiration from the numerous sources of craft and design
within the house. William Morris patterns, stained and coloured
glass, ornate textiles can all be sketched and copied to develop
portofolio or project ideas. Costumed tours are also available on
request.
