Research and resources

Linley Sambourne posingUntil 2000, Linley Sambourne House contained thousands of unsorted papers relating to the Sambourne family and life at 18 Stafford Terrace. With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, this material has now been catalogued and is stored at Kensington Central Library, just five minutes’ walk from Linley Sambourne House.

The Sambourne Family Archive is in itself an outstanding resource. Dating from 1815 to the present day, it includes the diaries kept by Edward Linley Sambourne, his wife Marion and their son Roy, as well as letters, legal and financial papers, bills and receipts for work carried out at the house, photographs and ephemera. The archive also contains papers relating to the more recent history of the house.

Altogether, this material allows the daily life of the family to be pieced together as well as giving detailed insights into Sambourne’s professional life at Punch and late Victorian/Edwardian society.
