GALTON &
SIMPSON
"Pioneers of
British Sitcom”
In conversation with Maurice
Gran
Saturday 16 July,
2pm at Opera Holland Park
GALTON & SIMPSON, the men behind such legendary
comedies such as Hancock’s Half Hour and Steptoe and
Son will engage in an afternoon of anecdote and chat with
Maurice Gran, the writer behind hits such as the New
Statesman, Birds of a Feather and Goodnight
Sweetheart. In a hilarious and informal reminiscence of
their long careers, Galton & Simpson in conversation with
Maurice Gran promises to be one of the more irreverent, fascinating
and entertaining afternoons you could encounter.
In the early stages of their career, Galton and Simpson worked
from an office over a greengrocer's in Shepherds Bush, along with a
crowd of up and coming writers and performers including Peter
Sellers, Frankie Howerd, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes. Since then,
they have been responsible for some of the most pioneering and
memorable comedy ever created on British television and in the
process working with some of the greatest names in British comedy
including; Sid James, Les Dawson, Leslie Phillips, Kenneth Williams
and many more.
It was with Tony Hancock that they really made their name which
they began writing in 1954. They created 101 episodes for radio and
a further 63 when it transferred to television.
Maurice Gran, along with his writing partner
Laurence Marks created the hit sitcoms Birds of a feather,
The New Statesman (with Rik Mayall) and Goodnight
Sweetheart among others.
This very special event will feature some of British comedy’s
most successful creators and is not to be missed by comedy fans,
writers, TV addicts and anybody who likes a good old fashioned
laugh!
