Singers hit high the notes

Recitial at Chelsea and Westminister hospitalTen venues, nine singers, three pianists and a combined audience of 500 people. On 10 February Opera Holland Park went on a ‘Big Day Out’ performing a day of free recitals at venues in and around the borough.

The day started with a recital at The Miranda Barry Centre and continued with visits to schools, care centres, community facilities and public venues including The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, The Thamesbrook Rehabilitation Day Centre, Oxford Gardens Primary School and even Waitrose, Kensington High Street.

The day formed part of the company’s ongoing outreach programme designed to take opera to the widest possible audience, including those who may no longer be able to travel to theatres.

The day’s busy schedule gave people across the borough a chance to see opera for free and proved very successful…

Thank you very much. The children loved it!
Diane Martinho, Headmistress, Oxford Gardens School

We all thoroughly enjoyed the performance yesterday and were really pleased you managed to fit us into your busy schedule!  The size of the audience was very good for a non-scheduled event so that is really testament to the quality of the singers.
Katherine Mellor, Hospital Arts, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

Speaking about the day, Councillor Nick Paget-Brown, Cabinet Member for Leisure commented:

“It is great to see that the Council’s investment in opera is being brought to an even wider audience. Since we created the opera in 1996 it has grown in stature to become a renowned national theatre company. Our aim has always been to give as many people in the borough and beyond the opportunity to hear great opera. I commend all those involved in taking Opera Holland Park out of the park and nearer to residents in such an innovative way"
