Forest School encourages the development of the children’s emotional and physical development through outdoor play, activities and exploration in a woodland classroom.

Spending time in a wood on a regular basis is a wonderful chance for children to connect with nature. All the activities take into account learning styles and schemas. The programme helps to build self esteem, communication skills, independence and self confidence.

Teachers' Testimonials

"We all thoroughly enjoyed our visits to the Forest School and the children gained so much from these visits. Both Trevor and Mathew were incredibly supportive of our children's needs and were calm, friendly and led the sessions exceptionally well. They made a real effort to get to know the children and very quickly learned their names and their characters! The pace of the sessions were good and the children were fully engaged and very enthusiastic!"

The sessions were all very well-planned and had clear objectives, which were met. Thank you so much for all your work. I look forward to returning again with my new class next year!

"The children adored every minute with Trevor - they spent all week talking about what they had learnt and we had queues of parents wanting to come and help. Thank you to all the team. We cannot wait to do it again."

"This service provided our girls with 'hands on' experience that we could never replicate in the classroom or playground. I believe it is an outstanding programme, run by incredidbly knowledgeable, competent and approachable staff. We can't wait to introduce our next classes to this outdoor adventure!"

"Forest school was a marvellous opportunity for the children to learn and a highlight in our academic year. It brought to life key learning concepts from our curriculum and enabled children to take their new-found confidence from their experience into their own lives. Children taking part naturally learned to assess risk and were encouraged to make sensible and informed decisions about how to deal with unfamiliar and unpredictable situations. The deeper learning experiences for each child came as a result of the opportunities they had for testing their own abilities in a real life context. We hope to return soon!"

"We have thoroughly enjoyed visiting the centre over the year, across the different seasons - staff and children have loved the interactive sessions and we've expanded on what we learnt at the centre once back at school. We just wish we could visit more often! Thank you Trevor - we look forward to seeing you in the next academic year."

"I strongly agree with all the statements above. My class absolutely loved visiting the forest school. The children I teach all live in an urban environment, so being able to learn about and connect with the natural work is hugely beneficial. Also, the forest school is a place where children have freedom to explore in their own space and time as the way it is set up is highly conducive to self-guided exploration. As a result, there are very few, if any, behavioural difficulties on our visits. the children retained much of what they learnt and continued to talk about it for a long time afterwards. We will certainly be aiming to return in the next academic year. Thank you."

Tell us what you think. Your feeback is important to us

We aim to constantly improve our service to pupils and teachers. Teachers and group leaders are asked to complete a brief evaluation at the end of the visit. We always welcome suggestions on how to make your visit more effective and enjoyable, as well as new services you would like to see the Ecology Centre provide.

We use the following form to collect feedback from teachers after Forest School sessions. Forms will also be given to teachers after the visit.
