The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
Garden Waste Collection Service  - Consultation

Further to the recent letter of 8 April sent to those registered for the Council's Garden Waste Collection Service, the Council is re-consulting on its future.

The Council is considering stopping the Garden Waste Collection Service for various reasons, including the following:

1.  Technical analysis suggests incinerating garden waste at the ‘energy from waste’ plant used by the Council rather than composting it actually provides a carbon benefit once the effects of the transportation of the waste are taken into account.
2.  The ash produced from the 'energy from waste' process is recycled.
3.  The use of the additional truck required to collect garden waste adds to pollution and congestion.
4.  Collecting garden waste with general waste means that it is taken away twice a week rather than fortnightly.
5.  Fewer than 2,000 people use the service (less than 3 per cent of households).
6.  Some of the garden waste collected via the service cannot actually be composted, such as logs, wood or tree roots larger then 30cm in diameter and over 2m long.
7.  The service costs £50,000 a year to run at a time when the Council is facing considerable financial constraints.

Further information on the technical analysis undertaken can be viewed by clicking here.

Only one response per household will be considered.
