The Pont Street entry in the Chelsea Directory, 1896
Actor-Manager George Alexander is listed as resident of 57 Pont Street in the Chelsea Directory for 1896. In 1891 he took over the St James Theatre and presented brilliant seasons of plays by Wilde and Pinero. Despite being a friend of Wilde and profiting from his work Alexander continued to put on his plays after Wilde's imprisonment, but with his name blacked out. He also bought the acting rights, bequeathing them to Oscar's son Vyvyan. Two other actors also lived in Pont Street at the same time, Lillie Langtry and Mrs Patrick Campbell.
