Building the Embankment photographed by James Hedderly in 1873
This is a very rare photographic image of the construction of the Chelsea Embankment Chelsea Embankment. It is another example of James Hedderly's work. The embankment wall and lamp holders are in place. The pavement slabs are on site but, as yet, not laid. The roadway and the ornamental gardens are still to be built. In the background the houses in Cheyne Walk can be seen. Prior to construction the river would have reached the fence under the trees.
