Kensington and Chelsea Civic Centre today, as seen from the roof of the Central Library. The architect was Sir Basil Spence, who died before the work was completed. Coventry Cathedral and the Knightsbridge Barracks are his best-known works.
The building on the left houses the exhibition halls. The Council Chamber and Mayor's Parlour are accommodated in the octagonal building on the right. The largest block seen in the background houses all the key council departments and offices.
Much controversy surrounded the building, both over the modernist designs and the site.
