Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Scheme
The Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Scheme, founded in 1953, is a registered charity which exists to ”encourage horticulture in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in particular by awarding prizes in open competitions to the residents of the Borough”. Through our work we contribute to the Royal Borough’s success in the Britain in Bloom and London in Bloom competitions, where community involvement is increasingly valued in the judging.
Our principal activity is the Annual Competition. Every summer our numerous entrants make a great contribution to the green look of the Royal Borough. There are categories for everyone: gardens patios, balconies and window boxes of private houses and flats, schools and garden squares. We are particularly keen to encourage entries from community projects, commercial premises including hotels and pubs, and entries from householders whose efforts brighten up the whole street.
Although we do not give prizes with a monetary value, there are over 50 cups awarded at the Scheme’s annual prizegiving and reception in November, which is a great opportunity to meet other gardeners. Entry is free and winners receive a 10 per cent discount card from a local nursery.
