Independent (or public or boarding) schools are not government funded, and rely on charging parents of pupils a fee for attendance - ranging from £1,000 to over £5,000 per term. They are free to select their pupils, and their own learning programmes, and may specialise in certain subjects. Some give greater weighting to religious teachings.
This list of independent schools is not extensive, and there may be schools in the Royal Borough that are not listed. Fees were accurate at the time of the last update but please check with schools for any changes of prices and rates)

Each school has its own selection criteria, which could include aptitude tests, interviews, references, previous school reports, parental ability to finance schooling, and some operate a first come, first serve basis. Specialist schools will also take into account other factors such as sporting and musical ability, and will have their own testing criteria for this.
