2015 marks 150 years of Portobello and Golborne Markets and there is a fun-packed and active year planned to celebrate.  Each month we will focus on a different speciality of the market, from seasonal veg, to books, antiques and fashion. for example in January we focused on seasonal veg and had a cooking demonstration using mushrooms.

 You will be supervised by the Markets Developments Officer. A full induction to the role will be given, as well as ongoing volunteering-related training as required.

 The volunteer opportunities aim to be sociable and offer new chances for learning and skills development. We want our volunteers to feel that they are part of the team, however long they stay with us.

  • We can reimburse receipted out-of-pocket expenses to a maximum of £6 per day for travel and to a maximum of £4 per day for meals, (for meals if you are in for a minimum of 6 hours on the day).
  • If appropriate, we can also provide references.

Social Media Volunteer

We are looking for technology savvy, good communicators to help out as Social Media volunteers to help build interest and excitement about the monthly themes and the market, encourage people to come along and get involved in our events and shop in the market

Role title: Social Media Volunteer

Where: Portobello and Golborne Market; different location within the market, the Street Trading office is number 72 Tavistock Road W11 1AN.

When: There will be on-going and event based work so it’s flexible depending on when you’re free. Events are often held on the third Friday of the month. Events will largely be held on the 3rd Friday of the month so we are looking for people who are free then. The usual timing is 10 am to 4 pm, but you can do half a day if you wish with events running from 11 to 3 pm. But as it is social media you can get involved when you have time and come to the market on different days as well as do some from a distance.

There will be events held on different days and in different location as well and if you sign up to volunteer we can keep you up to date with them.

How much of your time we ask for: We can be very flexible but if you can help with a minimum for 2 events that would be great. The events go on all year so there are plenty of opportunities.

Who the role will suit: Good with technology, great communicators through different mediums and have commercial awareness. If you would like to gain experience of marketing, build your CV, work in a community, or just want something fun to do in your free time this is a good opportunity.

Why we need your help:

We are looking for Social Media Volunteers to help publicise the events and engage people’s interest in the market.

  • Be able to post, upload, tweet, pin (I’m not sure if there are any more verbs) on a number of social media sites including some (or all of) Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest and Flickr
  • Be around the market finding interesting things to post
  • Have a good standard of English
  • Have commercial awareness and help support the business in Portobello and Golborne Market
  • Encourage people to take part in the 150 year challenge

Volunteer Event Assistant

Where: Portobello and Golborne Market; different location within the market, the Street Trading office is number 72 Tavistock Road W11 1AN.

When: Mainly Third Friday of the month, between 10 am and 4 pm.

How much of your time we ask for: A minimum of two days and more if you wish to get a reference-as we will need to get to know you a bit. The events go on all year so there are plenty of opportunities.

Who the role will suit: Have an enthusiastic and friendly manner; enjoy meeting people, are good communicators, have commercial awareness. If you would like to gain experience of managing public events, build your CV, work in a community, or just want something fun to do in your free time this is a good opportunity.

Why we need your help: We are looking for Event Assistants to help run the events that are planned.

  • Setting up the activities- this might involve preparing craft activities, information and signage, moving tables and chairs, putting up gazebos etc.
  • Chatting to the public and getting them involved
  • Making sure the event runs smoothly and safely
  • Gathering visitor feedback
  • Clearing up after the event – this might include taking down and returning equipment or items that have been borrowed, tidying up, washing up
  • Providing general & event information to members of the public (either verbal interaction or distributing printed flyers)

Volunteer Photographer

Where: Portobello and Golborne Market; different location within the market, the Street Trading office is number 72 Tavistock Road W11 1AN.

When:There will be on-going and event based work so it’s flexible depending on when you’re free. Events are often held on the third Friday of the month.

How much of your time we ask for: A minimum of two events. The events go on all year so there are plenty of opportunities.

Who the role will suit: Are keen to develop their photographic skills in a vibrant environment. Also people who either want to get to know the market better or get more involved in a market they already know well.

Why we need your help: We are looking for Volunteer Photographers to help capture images of the event and the market. The scope can be wide, we are looking for picture that:

  • Capture the street scenes, hustle and bustle of the market Highlight individual treasures
  • Create a record of events
  • Show the faces and diversity of market visitors and traders Illustrate the market-the possibilities are endless....

Notes: You will need to bring your own camera and by volunteering agree that you will supply the images to the street market and that they may be used (credited to you).
