Day and Night

'This work was born out of experiences in India, where I was inspired by the gestures and movements of classical dancers. The two artworks seen here, Day and Night have been painted using the ancient technique of egg tempera and natural ocres. The works have been made on Khaadi paper and there are forty-nine small studies in each ‘collective’ piece. The works mirror the gestures and movements of the dancers I met in India and are intended as a reminder of our universal commitment to one another. All of my artistic works since 2016 have explored human gesture, connection and deep coexistence.

The work in this exhibition celebrates uniquely human expressions. The gestures and movements captured here, in paint, look to find union and relation with one another. The work seeks out the love which is sometimes hidden beneath individual and collective actions. ‘Keep calm and carry on’ is the Queen’s enduring mantra and she is a great example of how to hold it all together.'

Sarah currently teaches at Hill House International Junior School, at the main school based in Hans Place and the arts centre on Radnor Walk, just off Kings Road. At Hill House she welcomes the opportunity to further share the artistic knowledge she has gained both in the UK and internationally, namely at Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. She is passionate about education and community building, believing wholeheartedly that the arts can help sustain a more benevolent and compassionate society.
