Relationships: Friendships, Dating & Community Life

Actions

Becoming a young adult is an exciting time full of new opportunities – but it can also feel a bit daunting. Leaving school or college often means a big change in daily routines, and it can be harder to keep in touch with friends or make new ones.

From Year 9 onwards, young people should be supported to think about what they enjoy, how they want to spend their free time, and what relationships matter to them as they move into adulthood.

This section is here to help you explore:

  • How to stay connected or make new friends

  • Getting involved in your local community

  • Romantic relationships and dating

  • Social groups and activities made for young people with SEND

Meeting People and Making Friends

It’s not always easy to meet people once school or college ends, but there are friendly groups, clubs and online spaces where you can connect with others who share your interests or experiences.

Here are a few places you might want to explore:

  • The National Autistic Society – Offers social groups and employment support for young people with autism.

  • Scope – Has online communities where disabled young people can talk, share advice, and make connections.

  • The Sunnybank Trust – Runs fun and inclusive social activities for young adults with a learning disability.

  • Lifeworks by YMCA East Surrey – Offers activity days and social events for people aged 16+ with disabilities in Reigate and Redhill.

  • Action on Disability - West London Disabled People's Organisation (DPO) led by disabled people, for disabled people. We work to ensure that disabled people have independence.

  • Action on Disability Youth Club - Wide range of fun and accessible opportunities for young disabled people aged 11-25. Young people can challenge themselves, make new friends and learn new skills. We provide a range of activities during term time and the holiday period.

Romantic Relationships and Dating

Lots of young people want to explore romantic relationships, but knowing where to start can feel tricky. Online dating is now one of the most popular ways to meet someone new.

There are also specialist dating services for people with SEND, including:

  • Flame Introductions

  • Outsiders

  • Able2UK

  • Disability Matches

These platforms are designed to be safe and welcoming, helping people build friendships and relationships at their own pace.
