What is the Disabled Children's Register?

The register is a database that holds information about children and young people with disabilities and special needs who live in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Why do we have a register and what is it used for?

The Children’s Act 1989 requires us to keep a register. The register helps us to plan and develop services for children and young people with disabilities. In addition to planning, the register also helps us to involve and inform families as well as keep in touch and share news and information.

Why should I sign up to it?

The Disabled Children's Register helps us to help children and young people with disabilities or special needs by:

  • giving you relevant information, advice and support that is targeted directly to your child’s needs,
  • giving you information from other services which specialise in working with disabled children,
  • the register accurately reflects the range of disabilities and special needs of local children and young people, and
  • having a better understanding of your needs, helps us to plan services for the future of all children and young people with disabilities and special needs.

Families who sign-up their child to the Disabled Children's Register will also receive a free Max Card. This is the UK’s leading discount card for families of children with SEND. Use the Max Card to save money on great days out across the UK from castles, zoos, bowling alleys, trampoline parks and much more. For more information on what the card offers visit https://mymaxcard.co.uk/

How do we manage your information?

The information will be managed by the Disabled Children’s Team. We may also share anonymous information with other council teams and partner agencies, to help us jointly plan services. Registering will not affect any services or benefits that you may currently receive. Your information will be managed in strict accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Who can register?

Putting your child’s name on the register is entirely voluntary, but the more information we can gather about needs of disabled children and young people, the better we can plan local services. You will not be asked to prove the nature of your child’s condition before they can be included on the register, and no assessment is needed.
