Royal Society for Blind Children

Suitable for an individual with vision impairment

At the Royal Society for Blind Children, we believe no child in the UK should grow up to be poor or lonely just because they are blind.

There are an estimated 36,000 blind and partially sighted children and young people in England and Wales. Every day, four more children will be diagnosed with sight loss.

We create a better life for blind children, by helping every young person we work with to find and fulfil their own unique potential. We are there for them from the moment they are told they have lost their sight, guiding them and their families on their journey through sight loss. We provide them with a combination of support, learning and development opportunities to help them develop the resilience and skills they will need to navigate their own futures.

We do this with a range of services including:

  • Family Support Service (0 – 25) – face to face support, providing the whole family unit practical and emotional support around a young person’s sight loss, whether you’ve recently found out about your child’s sight condition, or if their sight loss is part of other needs.
  • Live Life, Go Further Programme (8 - 25) – a range of services and activities across London, for visually impaired young people to attend to increase confidence, skills and independence. We provide school holiday activity programmes plus monthly Health and Wellbeing, Social and Independence and Creative Clubs
  • Employability Programme (16 – 25) – a bespoke, 1:1 employment service that offers young people the opportunity to gain essential workplace skills, practical support and information to get their foot on the employment ladder, including assistive technology sessions.
  • Dorton College (16 – 25) – in partnership with South East London Colleges, Dorton College offers access to mainstream curriculum, as well as offering bespoke VI support and access to specialist services.
