Young Humans of West London

What is Young Humans of West London?

Young Humans of West London (YHOWL) is a blog project inspired by the popular Humans of New York: an online catalogue of photographs, quotes and short stories from people all over New York, providing ‘daily glimpses into the lives of strangers’.

Led by the LSCB Community Development Workers, YHOWL was set up to achieve something similar. YHOWL provides a platform for Muslim young people to challenge the negative perceptions and stereotypes that are presented in the media by sharing their stories about what it’s like to live or go to school in Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster. Recent feedback from local communities has also helped us to understand that young Muslims are experiencing negativity particularly when looking for a job.

For these reasons, young people have been asked to talk about their achievements, goals and aspirations, their involvement with their local community and what makes them feel safe in West London. We hope that by sharing positive stories, we can counter negative stereotypes and feelings of being targeted which in turn will help young people to feel safe and break down any barriers to achieving their potential.

We hope that this collaborative project will also lead to stronger links with the local community and the possibility of ongoing young person led projects.
