Workshop Details

The fruits of Morris & Co

In this online workshop participants will learn how to hand embroider a design by Lora Avedian, inspired by the classic Morris & Co fruit wallpaper found in Sambourne House.

In the class we will be looking at a combination of traditional embroidery stitches, including french knots, stem, couching, and blanket stitches, combined with appliqued materials. Each student will come away having learnt the above embroidery stitches, and how to apply them to the embroidery pattern. With a beautiful kit included with the class,  your finished artwork could be hung on a wall as an ornamental piece or used domestically to create, for example, a decorative pillow.

The kit, which will be posted to you in advance of the workshop, will include:

  • 1x cotton/linen tea towel with printed design
  • Embroidery threads
  • Pre-cut leaf applique material
  • 1 x embroidery needle
  • Stitch technique guide
  • Embroidery hoop

To guarantee full dedication from Lora and create an intimate class atmosphere,  places are extremely limited.

Please note, for UK residents bookings will close at 6pm (GMT) on Tuesday 18 January to allow time for embroidery kits to be delivered. For overseas ticket holders, please book early to allow 2 weeks for delivery.

About Lora Avedian

Multidisciplinary artist and designer Lora Avedian focuses her practice on textiles and embroidery. She is influenced by nature and inspired by a broad range of historical art and design, including costume and ceramics as well as ancient objects in relation to her Armenian ancestry. Lora uses traditional embroidery and embellishment techniques to make modern artefacts, which look as beautiful on the body as they do on a wall. She favours slow processes, focusing on short run and bespoke projects.

You can learn about some of Lora’s key embroidery techniques through her book Stitch In Bloom: Botanical inspired embroidery projects for you and your home (Hardie Grant 2021). Lora sells her work through The New Craftsmen and has stocked limited edition collections of work at Fortnum & Mason, Barbican Centre, and soon at the Victoria & Albert Museum shop.
