Despite a relatively low crime rate, the land under and adjacent to the Westway remains somewhat forbidding. One of the Council's strategic ambitions is to transform the area into something that looks more appealing and which feels more secure.
Over the past few years the reduction in its funding by Government has prompted the Council to look at different ways of lowering its costs to help protect front line services.
Several buildings under and around the Westway are Council owned, some are no longer fit for purpose and others are used for services that could easily be relocated to reduce running costs and make those surplus buildings available for sale or rent.
Plans to guide future development of the Westway were formally adopted by the Royal Borough in December 2012.
