The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Cllr Marie-Therese Rossi, was pleased to host the Party Secretary of Beijing, Mr Cai Qi, at the Western Riverside Waste Authority yesterday (Monday 14 May), to showcase best practice in waste management.
Mr Qi’s meeting with Cllr Rossi and Council staff was part of his wider visit to London, including meeting with David Lidington, Minister for the Cabinet Office.
Cllr Rossi said: “It was a pleasure to host Mr Cai Qi and showcase some of the Council’s best practice in waste management.
“Kensington and Chelsea Council is making great efforts to reduce the carbon impact of waste disposal and ensure that waste material is either recycled or, if not recyclable, is transformed into energy.
“I thank Mr Qi for the welcome opportunity to share our practice while also learning more and building links with the city of Beijing.”
The Mayor and WRWA staff showed the Chinese delegation how recycling is automatically separated into different materials, ready for reuse.
Kensington and Chelsea is one of the few councils in the UK able to maintain twice-weekly kerbside collection and, through the use of innovative technology and systems, is able to do so without sending any waste to landfill.
This provides a good service to residents while being sustainable for the environment.
Council and WRWA staff also explained to the Chinese delegation efforts to increase recycling rates in the borough, including by offering a garden waste collection, a food waste trial, free recycling sacks and new street recycling centres.
