A bike trip to the shops, a cycle around North Kensington or a spin to the local park will now be possible for residents with mobility issues following the introduction a free cycle taxi service called Ride Side by Side.
The specialist cycle has two seats, two sets of pedals and is ridden by a specially trained ‘pilot’ who will take passengers from their front doors to the shops, to visit friends, to the community centre or simply on a ride to explore the area. Passengers don’t have to cycle if they don’t want to. They can just sit and enjoy being out and about in their neighbourhood.
The scheme, which is sponsored by Kensington and Chelsea Council and run by Cycle Training UK, will operate from the Dalgarno Community Centre on Wednesdays through to late Autumn. The sessions can last for up to 90 minutes.
Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith, Deputy Leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said: “This is a fun way to help people with mobility issues get out and about. They can use the Ride Side by Side bike for a trip to the shops or simply to explore their area. If they don’t want to cycle they can just sit back and leave the ‘pilot’ to do the work.
“It is the latest scheme that Council is offering to encourage residents to enjoy the benefits of cycling. Other initiatives include cycle training and marshal led cycle rides to build up people’s confidence. We tested the Ride Side By Side cycle taxi with some older residents who go on our regular organised cycling trips and they thoroughly enjoyed it.”
