2017 is off to a Healthy Start

Go Golborne has been working with the RBKC Markets team and Mytime Active to raise awareness of the Healthy Start scheme and make it easier for local families to buy affordable fruit and vegetables.

Councillors headed down to Portobello Market on Friday 20 January to show their support to market traders who have recently signed up to accept Healthy Start vouchers for fresh fruit and vegetables. Healthy Start vouchers are available to families with young children who are on a low income to spend on milk, plain fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables, and infant formula milk. Free vitamins are also available.

Whilst at the Market, the Councillors also visited a special Healthy Start promotion stall that we organised to raise awareness of the scheme and treat passers-by to samples of healthy recipes made with fresh ingredients from the market.

Welcoming the scheme Councillor Ahern, Cabinet Member for Environment, Environmental Health and Leisure said, ‘It is wonderful news that all fruit and vegetable traders along Portobello Road now accept the vouchers. We know that fruit and vegetables are considerably cheaper to buy at the market as compared to a supermarket, so this scheme helps families on a low income to access a healthy diet whilst also supporting local businesses to grow’

A map showing the stalls that accept Healthy Start vouchers has been created by RBKC’s Markets team.
