TRAVELLER'S TALES: TILES

 

Suitable for Key Stage 1 & 2 | Maths, Geography, Art & Design, Citizenship

90 minute session

Travellers Tales, TalesAlthough chiefly known as a great artist, Frederic, Lord Leighton was also an intrepid traveller and prolific collector.

On a journey through the Museum, follow in the footsteps of Lord Leighton as he travels across Europe and the Middle East.  Use maths skills to discover the pattern and symmetry in the rare and beautiful Islamic tiles he brought back from Syria and Turkey, and the original tiles he commissioned from William de Morgan (1839 – 1917).  Use creative thinking and problem-solving skills with a hands - on opportunity to design a tile, and create a harmonious scheme by working with classmates in teams.

Led by experienced museum educators, the workshop takes place within the historic building and children work with real artefacts from our handling collection.

 

 

 

 

 

 

TRAVELLER'S TALES: MYTHS

 

Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2 | Literacy, History, Geography, Art and Design, Citizenship

90 minute session

 

Travellers Tales, MythsFrederic, Lord Leighton was fascinated by the ancient classical world, and frequently drew on Greek mythology for subject matter.

On a journey through the house, using creative thinking and problem-solving skills, children will learn how to read stories in artworks and respond to the beautiful and evocative spaces they explore as starting points for their own creative storytelling.  Children will also learn about Victorian travel, in particular to the Middle East, and will see Leighton’s passport from 1883.

Led by experienced museum educators, the workshop takes place within the historic building and children work with real artefacts from our handling collection.
