The future of recycling and waste

Operating an excellent waste and recycling collection service is one of our top priorities. Making recycling as easy as possible, encouraging waste minimisation and improving the energy efficiency of our collection fleet, all reduce carbon emissions and are beneficial to the environment. In addition, keeping the streets clean helps keep them safe and is linked to better health outcomes and higher levels of wellbeing.

Our current waste contract with Suez expires in 2021 and we’re in the process of procuring a new one.

We would be grateful if you could spare a few minutes to complete this short survey, to let us know what you think should be included in the contract and also your views on the future of recycling and waste in Kensington and Chelsea.

The closing date for responses is 21 October 2019

New waste contract

Following large-scale consultations, which helped shape our Council plan, we've listened and are committed to keeping the high-level specification of the current contract, including:

- twice weekly waste and recycling collections
- waste and recycling basement collections, to help keep our streets clear
- the removal of rubbish dumping and offensive graffiti from public places, within 24 hours of being notified
- the regular emptying of our 500 litter bins
- the Too Big for the Bin collection service
- the delivery of intensive clean ups after major events, such as Notting Hill Carnival
- the fortnightly separate garden waste collection service
- the four separate food waste collection rounds
In addition, our new waste contract will include:

- paying the London Living wage as a minimum to all staff
- all vehicles to be zero emissions capable, subject to appropriate technology being available
- flexibility to change, if required, or to add new services such as a borough wide food waste collection if viable and environmentally beneficial
Q1

Reduce, re-use and recycle

As part of the contract, we are committed to working with our residents and businesses to increase the amount of recycling we capture and reduce the level of waste produced in our borough. We are currently developing a three year Reduction and Recycling Plan, which will detail the work we are doing in this field (once agreed, the plan will be available on the Council's website).

To help us understand residents' recycling habits and knowledge, please help us by answering the following questions.

Q6 Please indicate how strongly you agree, or disagree, with the following statements in relation to recycling.
Strongly agree   Agree   Neither agree nor disagree   Disagree   Strongly disagree
If I'm not sure if something can be recycled, I put it in the recycling bin/bag just in case it can

Putting things that can't be recycled in the recycling bin/bag doesn't make a difference as the recycling gets sorted after being collected

I rinse and dry anything with food or drink in it before putting it in the recycling bin/bag

Putting greasy or wet items in the recycling bin/bag is fine
