Actress Ellen Terry lived in Earls Court with her two children Edith and Gordon Craig and her beloved pets during the years of her greatest fame. Her partnership with Sir Henry Irving, private and professional, dominated the stage both in London and New York. She first lived in Longridge Road before moving to Barkston Gardens in 1889. The Rev. McColl, a neighbour in Longridge Road, recalled her departures for rehearsals thus: "She appeared on the steps like an April morning.... the air became tender and gay with wavings and blown kisses; the wheels revolved, and greyness descended once more."
