Map of Kensington 1848

Map of the Parish of Kensington, 1848

This map of the parish of Kensington shows the area just before the landscape was transformed from a rural to an urban environment. The fields, orchards, market gardens and farms can be clearly seen with only a few building developments along the major roads. Two events were to have a significant impact; the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the 'new' railways. Thirty years later only a few patches of open land remained the rest covered by bricks and mortar.
