Portrait of the dapper Whistler
Paul Caesar Hellen's portrayal of James McNeil Whistler in this etching shows so much of his character. A long-term resident of Chelsea Whistler became a familiar figure and well-known socialite. His artistic genius has been well documented, as has his flamboyant lifestyle, behaviour and dress, his conceit, stinging wit and sarcasm. His work is currently on show at Tate Britain as part of the Turner, Whistler and Monet.
