Page from the Domesday Book showing the Manors of Chelsea and Kensington
The Chelsea entry in the Domesday Book starts at the bottom of column one. It shows that the manor covered 780 acres, containing meadow and pasture land, woodland (probably Kensal) and 60 pigs and was valued at nine pounds. The Kensington entry is the first on column two and shows the manor had about 240 inhabitants, a priest and three acres of vineyard, together with woodland, meadows and pasture and, although larger, was only valued at six pounds.
