Paddle steamer moored at Chelsea photographed by James Hedderley c. 1870
This steamer belonged to the Citizen line, one of the four operating between Chelsea and the City. James Hedderley has captured life along the riverside just before the construction of Chelsea Embankment with its wharves, inns and warehouses. Barges can be seen carrying coal outside the merchants warehouse and next door rows of chimney stacks can be seen. Chelsea Old Church can be seen in the distance. The boat is moored adjacent to the Adam and Eve one of the oldest inns in Chelsea.
