Colherne Court in 2006 - 21st Century
Colherne Court on Old Brompton Road is one of the largest mansion blocks in the area. Without doubt the most famous recent occupant of Coleherne Court was Diana, Princess of Wales. Her father, the Earl Spencer, gave Diana the flat as an 18th birthday present. She moved in with three girlfriends in July 1979. On her bedroom door there was sign ‘Chief Chick’. On 23 February 1981 she moved into Clarence House. The next day her engagement to Prince Charles was announced.
Other famous recent residents include another royal bride Sophie Rhys-Jones, Countess of Wessex. The novelist Brigit Brophy lived here in the 1950s. Meetings of the Worker's Revolutionary Party were regularly held in flat 116. This was occupied by the actor Corin Redgrave and his family. An earlier resident, described on the next page, would have been very disturbed by these meetings.
